Joint across Scale!!!

I have recently read an article in The Toronto Star, which discussed the shut-down of Harmony Airways. As of April 9, 2007 all flights will be cancelled and travellers will have a chance to get a refund on thier tickets. Harmony Airways flew travellers around the U.S. and Canada from Vancouver to Toronto, Maui, Las Vegas and Palm Springs, California, and San Francisco. The CEO of the company said that Harmony Airways is not going bankrupt but rather is restructuring their services; yet, they did not renew any contracts with the airlines or employees. Additionally, all employees are being laid off with great severance pay and an amazing reference letter.

I found this article to be particularly interesting because it shows how we are all connected across scale. This company is one that exists in Vancouver, British Columbia; however, it greatly affects the people living in many U.S. cities and even Toronto, especially people who have family in Vancouver. Harmony Airways offered affordable tickets across Canada and U.S., and with the shut-down of the firm many people are being affected because not only will they have to pay more for tickets to get to or from these destinations, but they will also have to look at different airlines instead of the one they were used to. This article also shows how a smaller companies misfortune in Vancouver can affects thousands of people across North America.

I always knew that planes have a huge impact on us being connected with other places; however, after reading this article I began to wander what would happen to us if major airline companies like Air Canada, KLM, British Airways, would go out of service? How connected would we be to other places?
