The Workplace

While at my part time job it came to my acknowledgement of what makes this setting that I have associated myself with, a significant place that I have become accustom to over the years. The questions that come to mind are, what makes a great workplace? Is it pay, benefits? Is it too complex to understand? Traditional beliefs held that we should manage the workplace from the standpoint that people will always dislike work, and when they are at work, they will always want to be somewhere else. For years, organizations have attempted to measure and understand employee opinions in an attempt to understand the workplace. Much of the outcome has been discovering what a workplace is not, versus what it is. Many workers are turned on by what they do and whom they work for or with. They work in a job or an organization for more than the usual reasons, for something deeper and more meaningful than a good salary and generous benefits. While engendering passion and emotion are of course vital, a great place to work is also a place where people are able to apply their talent to the fullest. Individuals see the workplace as where they can grow, nurture and apply their skills and knowledge in ways that enable them to consistently produce excellence. The workplace is not just seen as an empty space where you got to be, but rather a place where you want to be.
