Caribbean Islands- Disneyland Affect
The Caribbean islands are known specifically as tourist destinations. Although they have a history and a culture of their own, it is not valued by the tourist industry. Caribbean islands sell themselves to potential tourists by recreating their image, in effect losing their identity and culture. The islands become artificial constructions, their image is based on the desire and needs of the tourist industry. These places are no longer viewed as natural but as imagined, unnatural creations. This transformation can be viewed as the Disneyland affect, in which the place becomes an artificial recreation, solely based on the needs of tourists. Although Caribbean islands are characterized as a desirable paradise, this is only an image. The areas near the resort are created to accommodate the tourist, however the real authentic image of the country is viewed outside of the resort. In addition, as the country loses its identity, the people working at these resorts are also effected, their personal identity changes.
